Bio

Marea Alta, under the musical direction of the Venezuelan jazz musician, J. Santiago Núñez, is currently based in the metro Atlanta area.   Prior to its establishment in Georgia, the group regularly performed in nightclubs and at many cultural events for several years in Tallahassee, Florida. Originally, Marea Alta was located in the Tampa Bay area during the early 1980s. In 1984, the Marea Alta project achieved popularity overseas when one of its original compositions reached the top ten spot within the musical charts in Caracas, Venezuela (position number four for three consecutive weeks and seven months in a row within the Venezuelan musical charts).

Marea Alta features an extensive inventory of original compositions that has seized and engaged listeners in hundreds of live performances. The members of the group are professional musicians who have ample experience in the realms of recording and live performance.  The musical style of the group is categorized as Smooth/Pop Jazz with Latin undertones. Marea Alta incorporates the improvisatory structure of jazz into a scheme of compound Latin rhythms and alluring melodic arrangements. The result of this musical blend is characterized by its ability to capture the musical taste of multiple audiences.  The music of Marea Alta is strictly unique (original) and designed to reach the attentive listener looking for a novel and brighter sound, a pleasant journey of contemporary rhythms and a fine musical expression.  The tropical and fresh music of the group has been described as a delightful beachfront style, like a cool breeze drifting off a high tide (Marea Alta) onto a warm sunny shoreline.

Marea Alta has been periodically featured within the regular programming of several jazz-oriented radio stations in Central and North Florida, Georgia, California and overseas (e.g.Venezuela, Chile, Spain, France, Canada and Australia).  Its music has also been broadcast on Internet radio. The multiple venues where Marea Alta has performed include several Atlanta Jazz Festivals, the Riverbend Festival (Chattanooga, TN), Fernbank Museum for Martinis & IMAX, Grand Hyatt Hotel Sunday Jazz Brunch, Sambuca Jazz Café, Centennial Olympic Park, Woodstock City Park, the Sandy Springs Festival, Callanwolde Fine Arts Center, the Annual Taste of Brookhaven, local television (NBC & FOX) & radio shows and numerous private events and benefits.  On March 26, 2006, the renowned radio program Fiesta Jazz within the network of PBS in Australia selected the group among a catalog of international Jazz artists for the second time to be included on a CD displaying a musical collection containing Latin Jazz music around the world.
